Grab your backpack and journey journal because you're about to see and experience an old world with a new view! Known for its Paella, Flamenco, and some of the world's most famous Conquistadors, Spain has so much to offer to the wandering heart.
Here are my top 5 cities in Spain:
1. Madrid
Madrid is the capital and Spains' largest city for a reason. It’s comparable to New York or Paris. From the many monuments and museums like, Museo Nacional del Prado, that has pieces from Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters. The gardens, such as Real Jardin Botanico was wone of my favorite places to see. The garden is a beautifully manicured landscape and has profound details about each plant and its history in Spain. Also, don’t forget to visit the many different Plaza’s, but especially Plaza Mayor. It’s what they consider their downtown area and the Royal Palace of Madrid is there! If you are a fan of the arts and looking for plenty of night lights then this is a must-visit in the city.
2. Segovia
Northwest of Madrid, this city here is utterly encantador (enchanting). A city built around the jaw-dropping Cathedral de Segovia and Castillo de Reyes. Everything has a story, but my favorite from here would be the story of the Aqueduct of Segovia. When you visit make sure to ask the locals or your tour guide about La Puenta de Diablo. I promise you it’s a good one! Its' rich roman style architecture makes it a great place for history buffs or people who just can appreciate the great heritage.
3. Cordoba
Córdoba is a city in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. I loved everything about this place except for the extreme heat. (I went in the summer months.) Beware of the gypsies here, as they tend to be a lot more aggressive than in other cities I’ve been to. No means no and you have to stick to it! And DO NOT accept anything from them unless you plan on paying. There is no such thing as a free gift there. The city was a major Islamic center in Spain so it’s only right that you see the Mosque of Cordoba and walk through the Alcazar of Christian Monarchs. The "calles" (streets) of this renaissance styled city are just as amazing as the food and people. Oh, don’t forget to go to a Flamenco show, it’s an experience of a lifetime!
4. Seville
Seville is the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region and has so much to offer. The top places to visit here are Royal Alcazar de Seville, Plaza Espana, and Cathedral de Sevilla. If you're up for it, take the time to climb the 34 flights of stairs at La Giralda is well worth it!
5. Cádiz
I will start by saying I am a little biased of this city. I spent most of my time in Spain here and Cádiz truly has my heart. Cádiz is an ancient port city in the Andalucia region of southwestern Spain and has the most spectacular view of the North Atlantic ocean. (As I said, I am biased.) Nothing is better than fresh seafood and fresh air. Your must-see places while visiting are Castillo de San Sebastian, Gran Teatro Falla, Parque Genoves, Gadir Archaeological Site, and Mercado Central. Do you want to soak in the sun and chill by the ocean? Playa de La Caleta and Playa de La Victoria were my favorites! I met so many new people here that became family and I had so many great nightlife experiences that I can’t imagine fitting into one paragraph. The best thing you can do, safely, is walking the "calles" and visit different Plaza’s. Food, fun, and shopping are great, but most of all Cádiz was the most welcoming out of all the cities and it made me feel like family.
